The text focuses on a collection of 21 prehistoric artefacts offered by the German Government to the Portuguese government in 1926, following the return of the containers with archaeological material from the imprisoned boat Cheruskia, in Lisbon. There are eight lithic instruments (daggers, chisels and polished axes) and 13 ceramic vessels. The ceramics are complete containers of different shapes and sizes, although some of them have undergone minor restorations on the edge. These pieces are kept at the Museum of the University of Porto. It also discusses the concepts that guided field collections and excavations, as well as the offerings of archaeological pieces during the end of the sec. XX and beginning of sec. XX

This paper is built on the spatially contextualised study of seed, fruit and faunal remains of consumption in Crasto de Palheiros during the Chalcolithic and Iron age, and attempts to interpret the archaeological evidence from both periods to understand: a. diet; b. collective consumption, contexts of commensality and their possible relation to feasting; and c. the social and political circumstances in which
production and consumption of domesticated animals and agricultural goods was situated. Particular emphasis is given to the overall characterisation of the “architectonic” and “functional” contexts of the
site, the use of bell beaker ceramics in the Chalcolithic, and the presence of riveted bronze cauldrons and Attic style ceramics (kraters) in the Iron Age. Together, the archaeological, archaeozoological and archaeobotanical results from Crasto de Palheiros are discussed in the context of the north of Portugal and north-west of the Iberian Peninsula.

(This is a capter of the book : Public Images Private Readings , in open source in Acheopress) The purpose of this paper is to make known 3 rock shelters / panels with very formalized images painted on them, known as "oculados" idols, discovered in Serra de Passos (Passos Mountain), northern Portugal. This is a region in which, until recently, these designs were unknown in the form of schematic painting.
These are figures and idiosyncratic compositions. Even though these show a certain resemblance to other southern and southeastern peninsular motifs, especially in the design of the eyes / eyebrows and facial tattoo, we will highlight its originality, this originality will be related with the specificity of the prehistoric settlement of Passos Mountain and its surroundings during the 3º mill. BC, as well as with the rise of socio political leaderships in the context of regional genealogical and iconographic traditions.

Fraga do Puio, in the extreme North East of Portugal, is a prominent and exposed natural rock platform with vertical cliffs, dominating the Douro river canyon. This site has an ethnographic meaning and it is identity significant for the inhabitants of the village of Picote, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro. A rock-carved panei at one of the most prominent corners of the platform depicts an archer in launch position with a figure representing the sun in the background. The engravings form part of a composition in which the peculiar natural features of the rock are used to simulate a "realistic action in the landscape". This text describes and discusses the iconographic imagery employing archaeological, chronological and ethnographic frameworks , in the attempt of providing a symbolic interpretation.

This paper deals about a collection of 21 artefacts: eight lithic instruments and 13 ceramic vessels dated from Recent Prehistory, offered in 1927 by the German Government to Portuguese Government. In the group of lithic instruments, we have identified two daggers, two chisels and four axes, while the group of ceramics consists solely of intact vessels of different shapes and sizes, some of which have been subject to small restorations on the rims. The text seeks to contextualize the intentions underlying the choice of such archaeological material to offer and the chronological-cultural links of recipients and instruments to possible collection contexts.

Within the eld of landscape archaeology, on one hand, and of the fenomenology that complements it, on the other, we will develop an analysis over the role that the places with rupestrian art may have had on the communities that created, maintained and lived in them.
To achieve this we will take on as example three cases of “places” with rupestrian art of schematic tradition of the North of Portugal, dated back to recent pre-history between the 4th and 2nd mill.
BC. Taking into account its conguration and topographic location, its patterns, the organization of the motifs etc. we will also support that these places may have had many specic contextual
functions; however these can be framed in a wider social function that is the maintenance of cosmologies and of social behaviors, meaning, the naturalization of the norms that support ideology.

Archaeology is shaken by a general call to overcome the structuring epistemological principles of the modern dualism-based scientific matrix from which incessant theoretical fragmentation has taken place in recent decades. In challenging the conceptual boundaries of archaeological discourse, it is urgent to question the ways in which we delimit archaeological categories that refer to ontological conceptions quite distant from modern Western thought, namely those of Prehistory, and how these societies would conceptualize their different borders. Reflecting on the boundaries of the Past necessarily requires discussion of the conceptual boundaries in modern research. The purpose of this session is to integrate the debate that permeates contemporary archaeology, using as thread the "boundaries" i.e., the interface that both unite and separate. Where do we draw the line between the mind and the material world, between "people" and "things"? We welcome critical approaches in defining central categories in the analysis of the materialities of the Past, whose conceptual boundaries remain blurred: e.g., ritual / ceremonial / mundane; extraordinary / ordinary; style / function / technique, etc. Can we blend those concepts? How, why and under which circumstances, namely in order to emphazise the process of formation and consolidation of prehistoric identities, focusing both the short time scale-in daily life contexts-and the regional long-term duration? In what ways can we identify / deduce spatial, social and ideological boundaries of prehistoric communities through the archaeological record? Similarly, we wonder how they produce, maintain, alter, and break boundaries over time. Given that historical circumstances and academic tradition give rise to narratives often accommodated to current political and / or administrative boundaries, tending to project them into the prehistoric Past, we also list this line of research for this session.
